Our Oceans
Our security, our economy, our very survival all require healthy oceans. From the air we breathe: The ocean produces over half of the world's oxygen and absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere. Climate regulation: Covering 70 percent of the Earth's surface, the ocean transports heat from the equator to the poles, regulating our climate and weather patterns. The Food we eat: Oceans provide at least a sixth of the animal protein people eat. The diversity and productivity of the world's oceans is a vital interest for humankind.
Why Plastic?
The inadequate management of plastic waste has created an environmental and economic crisis with an impact on the health of ecosystems, species and potentially human health.
Since the 50’s, more than 9.1 billion tons of plastic have been produced, and projected production by 2020 will be at least 500 million tons (900% more than in 1980). Every year 350 million tons are produced worldwide.
These quantities, its easy dispersion and its slow degradation process make plastic a threat to marine biodiversity and therefore a potential problem to human health.
